Thousands more children across the Southwest will get the medical help they need, thanks in part to a generous donation from the Valley Toyota Dealers Association (TDA).
The TDA, which includes dealers from the Phoenix area, announced last year it would match up to $250,000 for a new emergency department and trauma center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
“We had raised most of the money through philanthropy, but we really needed a final push,” says Tim Harrison, vice president of corporate partnerships for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “We had about $500,000 left to raise publicly, and then the Toyota dealers came through and put us over the finish line.”
Phoenix Children’s is the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Arizona. The hospital also serves underinsured or uninsured children – regardless of race, ethnicity or ability to pay.
The upgrades, completed last September, tripled the department’s capacity to treat pediatric patients, streamlined intake processes and decreased wait time for families in line to see a doctor. The hospital also managed to bring on more than 50 new employees and build a space dedicated to mental health treatment.
The Valley TDA’s donation is just the latest in a 15-year partnership with the hospital. Over the years, the dealers have donated more than $1 million to Phoenix Children’s, along with two Sienna minivans for staff transport.
In recognition of the TDA’s generosity, Phoenix Children’s named a space in a prominent patient hallway in the group’s honor.
“Our gratitude goes beyond words,” says Harrison. “These dealers are making such a big difference for so many kids in so many families. The impact is just incredible. You can’t measure it. And we definitely couldn’t do it without them.”
